Nell’estate del 1997 Robert Smith, un chirurgo, amputò una gamba completamente sana al suo paziente Kevin Wright, dell’età di 38 anni. L’amputazione del membro non fu dovuta ad un errore ma al desiderio dello stesso paziente che dalla sua infanzia lottava perchè gli fosse amputata questa gamba. Quando si risvegliò dall’anestesia Wright affermò di fronte ai giornalisti che adesso si sentiva un uomo completo.
